Shortcut to open a link in a new tab instead of a new window

Ctrl+click or press the middle button of your mouse to force open a link in a new tab. It should work in IE, chrome and Firefox. Sadly when tabs get popular with browsers, the HTML standard still lags behind and it seems that web designers are not able to define whether a link should open in a new window or a new tab.
